Wednesday Writing Craft: Head to the cafe…

JKR Cafe Quote

Today’s writing quote comes from the always amazing J.K. Rowling:  “The idea of just wandering off to a cafe with a notebook and writing and seeing where that takes me for awhile is just bliss.”

She said this in an interview she gave just a few days after the release of the final Harry Potter book in July 2007, about finally having the freedom to write something without the immense pressure she felt as she completed the worldwide phenomenon that Harry Potter had become.

But it’s also just good advice for anyone, really.  I myself plan to head to the cafe to continue work on this new story (that’s suddenly become a wonderful distraction from my possibly too-plotted-out novel), and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

Let me know in the comments if you have a favorite place to write that’s away from your desk, or if home is where your muse is!

[P.S. – I should have included this yesterday when I posted this quote, but if you’re a Potter fan and haven’t yet read J.K. Rowling’s new short works on Magic in North America, you should check them out on Pottermore.  I’ve read the first three so far, and while I understand there’s some talk about JKR’s take on Native American magic being problematic, for right now, I’m going to trust Queen Jo to do her level best to create a representative and well crafted story expanding the Wizarding World we’ve come to know and love.]

And of course, before you go, enjoy this cute illustration of a couple of dragons at a cafe, by the British artist Jason Pym.  You can find more of his art at the link.  Stay creative, everyone!

  1. I don’t write anywhere but at home – sitting straight up in my chair at my desktop computer. Sometimes though, I do slouch, put my elbow on the desk, and rest my head in my hand when I’m thinking.
