Update on the cyberstory, planning ahead, bookends, and a Pi dragon…

Gothic Castle Dragons Sculptural Bookends at Design Toscano

Greetings everyone!  Check out this nifty set of bookend dragons I found, initially through a post on the blog Hobbit Feet, and for sale at the website design Toscano.

I had planned to do a WIP post on Saturday but I got caught up in writing, which didn’t go quite as smoothly as I’d hoped, but at least resulted in some progress, I’m happy to report.

Though since I forgot that I’d changed up my posting schedule — moving the Writing Prompt to Tuesday in order to participate in the new WordPress Discover Challenge — and I expected to do a longer post today, I may as well take advantage.

For the inaugural Discover Challenge last week, I posted a short snippet of a cyberpunk story which has taken hold in my brain, which means I’m letting Finding Dragons simmer on the back burner for a little while.  But fear not, I’m still going to find a new dragon to post every day, because while I don’t see any dragons appearing in the story about Neeka, I still can’t give up my first love and the theme of this blog.

But now I’m trying not to plot too much of this new story, letting the characters tell me what’s going on rather than trying to force them down paths I’ve planned out for them.  It’s exciting, but also terrifying!

Then another real-life plot twist happened when my husband, who has read another draft piece plus what I posted about Neeka’s bus ride, suggested to me out of the blue that perhaps he could help me write this story, by creating a parallel narrative from the perspective of the big cyberware guy I threw into the scene as a background character, someone I didn’t expect to ever see again.  He’s really familiar with the whole cyberpunk genre, and he’s very talented, although he hasn’t written anything in a long while.

Our two characters would eventually meet up to solve… whatever it is that needs solving in this story, but as of now I have no idea how this would work.  But it’s an exciting idea!  So that’s where my focus is going to be for the next little while.

Moving on, all week I’ve been trying to check in with other writers who took the Discover Challenge about sensory writing, because one of the best things about WordPress is the community of bloggers who read each other’s work and leave great comments and feedback.  I made some comments of my own and did some follow-backs, but next week I’m planning to dedicate more time to my fellow writers, because it’s inspiring to see so many talented takes on the same theme.

While browsing around, I also discovered another blogging event that I’ve decided to enter for the upcoming month of April, called the A-to-Z Challenge.  It’s simply a huge group of bloggers — I was #1153 to sign up, and there’s still plenty of time! — dedicated to posting something new each day in April (but taking Sundays off), following the alphabet for inspiration.  Since I post every day anyway, I thought it would be a great fit.

I’ll post more about the challenge next Monday, which is the day of the Theme Reveal, when I’ll have a chance to share my theme with the rest of the bloggers signed up for the challenge.  I think it will be easy enough to find an interesting dragon related to each letter for my daily posts, and it’s another way for me to participate in the wider blogging community, so I’m excited.

If you would like to find out more information right away, be sure to check out that link above.  I’d love to see some of you try the challenge — Friday, April 1, 2016, we’ll start with the letter A, so you’ve got more than two and a half weeks to prepare for the month of posts.

Why not go for it?  (I’m especially looking at you, leet_g33k, 10nineteen, and Aethereal Engineer!) 🙂

And, finally, I found the cool bookends and formatted this whole post earlier today before I remembered that it’s Pi Day — 3.1416 — so here is the cutest Pumpkin Pie Dragon I could find, by deviantartist The-SixthLeafClover.  Enjoy, and as always, stay creative!

  1. Wow, you really keep yourself busy! The A to Z Challenge sounds great, but I don’t think I would be able to post every day. I’m working on a second, private blog, which is consuming most of my time now. Is it just me, or is creating a decent ‘about’ page one of the most difficult parts of setting up a new blog? I wonder.

I’m happy to hear that you’re working on Neeka’s story. I look forward to another excerpt! I really like the dragon bookends. But the little pumpkin pie dragon is sooo cute!

Thanks for sharing and enjoy the rest of your week…

    • Thanks, Melissa! I absolutely agree, the About page is so critical but also ridiculously hard to do. During the Blogging 101 course I went through back in January, there was a great assignment about it that helped me a lot. Check out my Jan. 20th post, inside there’s a link to WordPress’s “About 101” that I really liked, if you’re looking for inspiration. 🙂
Hopefully I’ll have more to post about Neeka soon! Thanks again for stopping by!

  2. Those bookends complete my life!

I’ve been meaning to look at these challenges and prompts people keep referencing, so thank you for the heads up! I accept your challenge, and have signed up 🙂 #1168

    • I know, aren’t they great! They were even on sale at that site yesterday, I think for $35? Great gift idea too.
And woohoo! So glad you’re going to do the challenge. I’m excited to see what you come up with! I’m working on today’s Discovery Challenge now, and I bet you could do something awesome with that too… 😀
